Since this is my first post, I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself and my work.
My very first job in the field was at a residential treatment center for children, at the ripe age of 20. That job was foundational for me, in that I learned about the affects of abuse, neglect, and mental illness on children, and how important therapy is for the whole family. Through the childrens’ behavior, artwork, and interactions with each other my eyes were opened to a world that is rarely talked about.
After that I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in counseling. Through my graduate training I was able to work in a variety of settings: a homeless shelter, a college and a regular clinic. These diverse experiences continued to reinforce this core truth I learned from my professors: relationships heal. Regardless of my fumbling around and being a total newbie, my clients kept showing up.
After grad school, I wanted to work with kids again, just like I did in my undergraduate job. I worked with an incredible community outpatient agency in my neighborhood, and learned a ton about systems and how they affect people, how to collaborate with other providers, and the importance of engaging the whole family in treatment.
Since then, I’ve been an independent provider. I received advanced training in EMDR and Internal Family Systems to address the things I was seeing in my work: the lingering effects of childhood trauma on adults, that lead them to repeat cycles and keeps them stuck. EMDR has been transformational in my work, seeing my clients find relief from debilitating traumatic experiences is truly a sacred place to be.
So that’s me in a nutshell. I’ve also got a love for the creative arts, and incorporate this in my work when appropriate. I believe in the power of storytelling, and in community. If you work with me I will also encourage you to take care of your body, because in doing that you will help your brain to heal.
